History of KazNTU
On 20 October, 1933 the USSR Council of People's Commissars has approved the Decree on establishment of the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute (KazMMI) in the city of Alma-Ata, the capital of Kazakhstan.
The educational process in KazMMI has started on 19 September, 1934. Ashir Zh. Burkitbayev has been appointed as the first director. The auditorium of the Institute included 146 students and 16 lecturers. The Institute conducted training in two specialties: exploration of ore and oil fields, and engineering hydrogeology of Geological Exploration Faculty. Two more specialties have been opened in 1935-1936: development of fields and metallurgy of non-ferrous and heavy metals.
KazMMI successfully overcome the difficulties of establishment and organization, in the shortest time won a reputation, became the main base for the provision of engineering experts for the mining, metallurgical, geological, construction and other industry branches. During the Great Patriotic War, the Institute has contributed to achieving victory, giving the front more than 200 students and lecturers. For the merit beyond the call of duty the following people have been awarded a rank of the Heroes of the Soviet Union: Musa Baimukhanov, Maxim Gubanov, Vladimir Zasyadko, Nikolai Markelov, Alexey Toropkin, Nikolai Yashchenko. Talgat Begeldinov has become a Twice Hero of the Soviet Union.
In 1960 KazMMI has been transformed into a polytechnic institute and attributed to the number of leading universities of the country where the training of qualified engineers was conducted in eight faculties.
Almaty Institute of Energy and Communications, Kazakh Leading Academy of Architecture and Construction have been opened on the basis of specific faculties. The most important subdivisions of KazPTI were the branches in Rudny, general technical faculties in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Leninogorsk, Karatau, Zyryanovsk, Shevchenko and Atyrau.
The Kazakh Polytechnic Institute named after V.Lenin was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor by Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 26 July, 1984 for the merits in the training of skilled specialists and development of scientific researches.
In January 1994 KazPTI named after V.Lenin has been transformed into the Kazakh National Technical University. From that moment, KazNTU as the head technical university of the country has been entrusted with special tasks for training of the experts as per multi-level structure, adopted in the international practice, as well as development of curriculum and programs for training per specialties.
In the nineties, the engineering experts trained by the university, have pursued an economic policy for the reformation of production and major industries of the sovereign Kazakhstan. Today, many graduates have become leading specialists in various industries and scientific research institutions.
For special merits in the training of engineering and technical experts of the country, the Kazakh National Technical University has been denominated the name of the outstanding scientist, academician Kanysh Imantaevich Satpayev by the Order of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 22 September, 1999.
9 institutes have been established on the basis of faculties in March 2000:.
Natural and Humanitarian Institute, Engineering Economic Institute, Institute of Information Technologies, Institute of Automation and Control, Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Geological Exploration Institute, Institute of Oil and Gas, Mining Institute, Institute of Metallurgy and Polygraphy.

2001
KazNTU named after K.Satpaev was awarded a special National status by Decree of N.Nazarbayev, the President RK dated 5 July, 2001 for significant contribution to the formation, development and professional formation of personality on the basis of national and universal values, achievements in science and technology.
The Mining Institute is denominated the name of O.Baykonurov by the decision of the Board of Studies.
The Natural and Humanitarian Institute is denominated the name of al-Mashani (Akzhan Mashanov) by the decision of the Board of Studies.
The Department of education has been established. A ctarget complex program "Education" has been developed and successfully implemented.
Student Colosseum – summer amphitheater for 600 people has been created. The Department of Science and Department of the International Relations as independent structure of the university have been created.
2002
A festival of graduating-excellent students "Samghau" has been held for the first time. Since that time, holding of this festival has become a good tradition.
Student department of Society of Petroleum Engineers of KazNTU has started to operate.
Engineering-Economic Institute was transformed into the Institute of economy and ecology.
2003
Selection Committee of organization B.I.G. (Paris) has awarded KazNTU, the only University on post-soviet territory with the “International Star Award” in nomination Gold for special merits in the training of specialists, high quality of education and dynamic development.
On 9 December, 2003 the Board of Studies of the Kazakh National Technical University named after K.Satpayev has approved a special sign in the form of intersected Mobius band as a symbol.
The International Youth Oil and Gas Forum has been held for the first time, organized by KazNTU SPE Students department. This forum holds annually.
2004
KazNTU has signed the Great Charter of Universities “Magna Charta Universitatum” in Bologna, Italy and entered the zone of European Higher Education.
Activity on introduction of three-level system of higher and post-graduate education has been started: the bachelor-master-PhD.
The historical museum has been opened in the block of Petroleum faculty.
TechnoPark of KazNTU named after K.I.Satpayev has been established in September, 2004 by the Kazakh National Technical University named after K.I.Satpayev and National Innovation Fund.
Technopark is established in the form of legal entity – Joint Stock Company. Contribution of KazNTU into statutory fund – the building of the former training and production workshops, and National Innovation Fund – monetary means.
Ceremonial actions on commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the university have been held.
2005
The University has entered into the composition of American Educational Consortium.
KazNTU has received certificates on conformity to the quality management system of the international standard ISO 9001:2000 from Certification Association “Russian register” and from the international certification organization IQNet.
2006
December. The 100th Anniversary of outstanding scientist, great pedagogue, the first director of the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute – Ashir Zhanalievich Burkitbayev.
The Institute of Metallurgy and Polygraphy is denominated the name after A.Burkitbayev by the Decision of the Board of Studies.
The whole world in the framework of UNESCO has celebrated 100th Anniversary of the corresponding member of the National Academy of Science RK, honored science worker of Kazakhstan, distinguished scientist of mining and historical sciences, graduate and professor of KazMMI (now KazNTU) - Akzhan Mashanov.
The Geological and Exploration Institute is denominated the name after K.Turysov by the decision of the Board of Studies.
2007
KazNTU takes the first place in the rating of budget funding determined by the National scientific and technical information center of Kazakhstan for the period of 2001-2006.
The University had won a rank “The Best High School of the Year” by taking part in the competition, organized by the agency “Choice of the Year” and republican socio-political newspaper “President and people”.
2008
The Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering is established.
The International Institute of postgraduate education is established.
The Institute of distant education is established.
On 25 June, the Board of Studies has accepted the “Development program of KazNTU named after K.I.Satpayev for the period of 2008-201”.
The competition “Zhas talap” for the best scientific work and best invention among the students and young scientists of high school has been held at the university for the first time.
An engineering profile laboratory on mining and metallurgical and oil and gas sector, equipped with unique scientific equipment at the cost of 200 million KZT has started to operate on the basis of the university.
The university has confirmed double Quality Management System Certificate on conformity to the International standard ISO 001:2000:1, No.05.243.026 dated 01 August, 2005 from the Association on certification “the Russian Register” of the International network of authorities on certification IQNet.
The State attestation of educational activity of KazNTU has been successfully passed.
KazNTU has become a participant of the Intergovernmental Association of High Schools of CIS.
The Department of Social Work and Medical Center is established.
The International Institute of Postgraduate education “Excellence Polytech” is established.
The Center on International Accreditation is established.
KazNTU won the 1st place in the rating of high schools of Kazakhstan per academic performance indexes in the training of specialists among technical high schools.
The wireless communication (Wi-Fi) is introduced with the connection of ICL (University Coliseum), Internet access speed is 10 MBite/sec;
2009
January. KazNTU took part in the exhibition “Science and Innovations” that being held in the Park of 
Information Technologies “Alatau City”. The official opening of the exhibition was held by N.Nazarbayev, National Chief Executive.
KazNTU won the grant of the MES RK for the opening of National Laboratory on information and space technologies.
In November took place the opening of Kazakhstan-Korean Center of Information – Communication Technologies, in the value of more than $6 million, where the first and single supercomputer in the RK is installed.
Association of KazNTU graduates “Alumni” is established with the purpose of creation of multilateral lasting strong relationships between KazNTU named after K.Satpayev and its graduates.
Certificate on accreditation of American University Council (AUAC) has been obtained.
Corporate information system “Polytech” and IT– infrastructure of high school is created.
The training in Bachelors degree using own experimental training programs has been started from 1 September based on the decision of MES RK.
Solemn events on celebration of the 75th Anniversary of University were held.
20 October is pronounced as Day of the University by the decision of the Board of Studies.
Joint training of bachelors, masters and PhD with double diploma issuance is realizing.
The new information technologies are implemented to the training process, and integrated educational information environment is created.
Festival “Spring in KazNTU” is held for the 46 time.
2010
The Institute of Hi-Tech and Sustainable Development named after al-Mashani is established on the basis of Natural and Humanitarian Institute.
In July took place the execution of trilateral Agreement between the Ministry of National Education of France, “Schneider Electric Kazakhstan” Company and KazNTU named after K.I.Satpayev on establishment of Kazakh –French Educational Center in the field of energetic, electrical engineering and maintenance of automated systems.
The decision on establishment of training center was taken in the course of official visit of Nikolya Sarkozi, the President of France, in the Republic of Kazakhstan, on 5 October, 2009.
In July, our university successfully passed accreditation in European Accreditation Agency ASIIN (Germany) and Accreditation Agency ABET (USA).
5 educational programs of KazNTU have been accredited by the decision of Accreditation Council ASIIN. Educational program on specialty 050709 “Metallurgy” is accredited in ABET Agency.
Today, all KazNTU activities are directed to the enhance of the university prestige, transformation, carried out at the university as well as to the training quality improvement and enhancement of the management system.
